I’m turning the big 4-0 at the end of this month. While so many people my age have been dreading this milestone, I’m totally embracing it. After all, you can’t stop getting older so you might as well make the best of it!
The funny thing is, my birthday hasn’t always been something I’ve looked forward to. It’s not even about turning another year older. It’s mostly the fact that my birthday celebrations haven’t always gone the way I thought they would.
Summer weather is totally unpredictable and I swear almost every year it’s stormed on my birthday. And last year, I got a traffic ticket on the way to buying myself a birthday peach pie. Oops! Not exactly the way I wanted to start my birthday!
But this year, I’m heading into 40 with a positive outlook, good vibes, and lots of birthday cake (and probably some pie, too)! So I decided to make myself a cake topper to welcome this new age. While I could have bought myself a birthday cake topper, I really wanted to try to DIY my birthday this year. Using my Cricut Maker, I was able to do just that!
How to Make a 40 & Fabulous Cake Topper
I used heavy glittery paper, some glue, and a couple toothpicks to create my “40 & Fabulous” cake topper. Then, I promptly bought myself a birthday cake to start my celebration early and test out my cake topper!
I created my cake topper design in Design Space using a couple different font types. After positioning my text, I welded it together to form one complete image.
Then, I duplicated the image, mirrored it horizontally, and resized it to fit my cake. The reason I mirrored it is so it looks the same from the front and back of the cake.
It’s not a birthday celebration without some glitter, so I cut the cake topper on heavyweight sparkle paper. I loaded a sheet of paper onto a LightGrip mat and loaded the mat into my Cricut Maker to cut. I cut the image twice so it popped right out of the paper.
Once the cake topper was cut, I carefully removed it from the mat. Then, I positioned my toothpicks onto the back of one of the cutouts. I used hot glue to glue all of the pieces together to form my cake topper.
The last thing I needed to do was test out my cake topper! So I got a small vegan vanilla layer cake and started my birthday celebration early!
- 40 & Fabulous Cake Topper File

- Sparkle Paper Sampler
- LightGrip Mat
- Hot glue gun
- Toothpicks, bamboo skewers, or paper straws
- Open the cake topper design in Design Space. Then, click Make It.
- Place a sheet of sparkle paper onto the LightGrip mat, load the mat into the machine, and press Go to cut. When the design has finished cutting, do not unload. Press go again.
- Once the design has been cut a second time, carefully remove it from the mat.
- Heat a hot glue gun. Then, add a dab of glue to each toothpick and place on one side of the cake topper.
- Add another dab of glue to the front of each toothpick and place the other side of the cake topper on top.
- Allow the glue to dry. Then, carefully press the cake topper into the top of your cake.
I never was one of those “birthday month” celebrators. But maybe I could get the hang of this month-long birthday celebration after all! This cake topper was so easy to make that I could definitely keep the celebration going cake after cake!
