The heat wave that warmed us last week turned quickly into a fall chill Saturday. I had plans to visit my brother, sister-in-law and niece with my mother on Sunday. The weather was perfect for a trip to Alstede Farms in Chester. Baby C got her first taste of farm life, but slept straight through the afternoon! She’s such a good baby. When we got to the farm, we found the animals. The farm had alpacas, cows, sheep, chickens, donkeys and goats. Although the feeding area was a hopping attraction for little ones, I had to take a turn feeding the goats!

We got our tickets to pick our choice of fruits, vegetables and flowers. With tickets in tow, we grabbed our boxes and headed for lunch. We sank our teeth into hot dogs and split an order of potato pancakes. When my brother and sister-in-law took the baby for a diaper change after lunch, mom and I found a nice spot to wait for them.

Leave it to us to find the wine tasting tent! The wine tasting was hosted by Tomasello Winery; a New Jersey vineyard who had quite a variety of wines to sample. For $5.00 you got to try five different wines and keep the souvenir glass. The first wine I tried was my favorite. Broomstick Brew is a smooth red wine with a hint of mulling spices. It was served warm from the crockpot and would be perfect enjoyed on a chilly fall or winter night. I had to buy a bottle. I probably should have bought two!

Alstede Farms is huge! If you don’t feel like walking from patch to patch, there are hayride stops to take you to your picking destination. We walked the majority of time. My sister-in-law and I found the berry bushes and picked red and yellow raspberries. We took a quick walk through the apple trees and I grabbed a couple of the biggest Gala apples I’ve ever seen! I also added a few Asian pears to my box. Our last picking stop was the peaches. Also available to be picked are peppers, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn, lettuce of all sorts and flowers. There is a farm store that sells baked goods and decorations that we couldn’t get close to, it was so packed. Maybe next time.
All in all, it was a nice day out with my family and I was happy to not only bring home fresh picked goodies, but fond memories of spending time with my little baby niece.
