I feel like I say this every month, but can you believe it’s the last week of September?  It’s amazing how quickly this year is flying by!  It’s almost scary!  Speaking of scary, with Halloween just around the corner, I wanted to share a couple not-so-scary pumpkin projects this week.

Not everyone is into the creepy, haunted side of Halloween. Most of the year, I stay far away from anything that might keep me up at night!  I have trouble sleeping as it is! Oddly enough, during the Halloween season, I can handle the gross and scary!

But today, I’m going to share a pumpkin project that shows off the cuter side of Halloween.  When Michael’s started putting out their Halloween supplies, I stocked up on craft pumpkins.  On the pumpkin display, there was a cactus pumpkin project.

As a huge cactus/succulent lover, I knew that I had to make my own version!  The only thing that really differed in their version was the cactus spikes.  They used push pins.  The thought of sitting down and poking push pins into my pumpkin seemed tedious (and painful!), so I decided to draw spikes on with a paint marker.

While I was shopping for supplies to make this project, I decided that I wanted my cactus pumpkin to be on the larger side. So instead of painting my pumpkin by hand, I spray painted it (shoutout to the lady in the spray paint department who helped me when I asked for a “cactus green”).  If you want to paint your pumpkin by hand, go right ahead.  It was a lot quicker to spray paint it!

Another thing – I just sat my pumpkin in the pot.  There was no need to glue it in, but if you want to keep everything steady in place, go ahead and add some glue to the rim of the pot.  I just might want to use my pot again in the Spring!

SUPPLIES

STEPS

  1. In a well-ventilated area, spray paint your pumpkin green.  You may need to spray two coats.  Allow paint to dry between coats.
  2. Turn the pumpkin upside-down and place into the terracotta pot.
  3. Heat a hot glue gun and snip flowers from stems with wire cutters.
  4. Arrange flowers on top of the pumpkin and glue into place.
  5. With a white paint marker, begin drawing “spikes” all around the pumpkin.
  6. Allow paint marker to dry and display.

This project is also a cute way to display your love for cacti if you’re like me and have a hard time keeping real cacti alive!  I’m getting better at taking care of my cacti and succulents – at least I think so – but it’s nice to have a cactus I don’t have to worry about!

Since this pumpkin doesn’t scream “Halloween,” you can keep it out all Fall!  I have mine sitting in my office and it’s an adorable piece of Fall decor that looks great among some of my other cacti projects!
