I had a rough day on Sunday. Rough in the sense that I was in hormonal pain mixed with a dose of seasonal sinus aches. It was all getting on my last nerve and I just wanted to barricade myself in the house and be left alone with my mood. Then I decided to spend my bleak mood crafting. It’s probably never a good idea to revisit an unsuccessful craft session when you might bite someone’s head off at any moment, but I did. I had a nagging sense of determination. I went back up into the attic and found two round pieces of wood (intended to be used as Easter eggs, but I thought otherwise) to attempt wood photo transfers again. I searched my Art & Photography Pinterest board for an image or two to use and broke out the Mod Podge.
Wood photo transfers took a little patience, but were worth the wait and I became quickly addicted to making them. I think my husband only agreed to help me cut and sand more wood (I got to use power tools, kids!) because he saw how it zapped me out of my wicked mood. My photo transfer project started with a skull and beach image. The beach image didn’t take as well as I hoped it would, but I was so happy with how the skull image turned out! My husband was kind enough to sand off the unsuccessful beach image so I could start again. This time I used an old tattooed circus girl photo I found off of Google. I’m in love with the result!
To make your own wood photo transfers: glue down your printed image (make sure you reverse the image before printing) with Mod Podge and let it dry. Once the Mod Podge is completely dry, wet a paper towel (wring it out so it’s not sopping wet) and lay it on top of the image for a few minutes. Once the paper is saturated, gently start to rub it off with your finger. You’ll notice that only the white paper backing will wipe off leaving the image behind. Don’t rub too hard though as you can take the image off! Add another coat of Mod Podge to seal the image and you’re done!
These would make great gifts! Aside from the fun images I’m finding online, I also chose to print a photo of my husband and me and I tried yet another beach image. If I’ve learned anything from crafting lately it’s that if at first you don’t succeed, you’ll get it right the next time and be hooked on your new art project!
