Make beautiful cards for any occasion with Cricut Cutaway Cards! Just create, cut, and reveal your design without corner cuts or stenciled fonts!

In my family, March isn’t just the start of spring. It’s the beginning of what seems like nonstop birthday celebrations from now until the end of the year. And that’s between all of those other celebrations like holidays and milestone events like graduations! So my Cricut Joy has definitely come in clutch when I need a card for all of those important dates!
I never shop for cards anymore. Now that I have my Cricut Joy and a variety of Insert Cards, I can create any type of card for any event right in Design Space! With Cricut’s new Cutaway Cards, I can make any design a reality without corner cuts or stenciled fonts! How? The game changer is adhesive backers!
Cricut Cutaway Cards
Instead of inserts, Cutaway Cards use a peel-and-stick adhesive backer. The backer sticks to the inside of the card. Then, create your design in Design Space and cut it using the Cricut Joy. Once the design is cut, weed away the cut pieces. The backer will peek through the cut design leaving you with a custom card that’s ready to be gifted!
Cards for Any Occasion
With three birthdays within one week and Easter just up ahead, I figured it was a great time to try out Cricut’s new Cutaway Cards! So I grabbed some premade designs in Design Space, my Cricut Joy pens and Cutaway Cards, and started creating some Easter and birthday cards!
The first thing I did was open the image library in Design Space and searched “cutaway.” From there, I was able to scroll through card designs and choose a few images including cards for birthdays and Easter.
Once my designs were chosen, I changed the colors to reflect the pens and cards I would be using. Then, I clicked “make it” and followed the prompts on screen to draw and cut the cards.
Once you make it to this screen, you want to make sure that you have the right card size set. On the left side of the screen, click the “material size” dropdown and make sure it’s set to 4.25 in x 5.5 in so the design aligns correctly. Then, continue.
All of my cards used different color pens so I paid attention to the screen to see which colors were coming up next. After my designs were drawn, I loaded the blade back into the machine and cut out each card.
The cool thing about the Cutaway Cards is that the Cricut Joy will only cut through the top layer of the card insert and the sticky backing. Once you weed the card, you’ll see the backer underneath!
Once all of my cards were cut, I went ahead and weeded the designs. Just be careful while you weed your design. You can poke through the backer (I accidentally did that a couple times with my first card).
Also, it’s easy to remove portions of the design you didn’t mean to. But that’s okay! The sticky backing makes it easy to stick the pieces back in place!
The result is a beautiful, custom made card ready to be written in and gifted to someone special!
