It started with a Target flyer a couple months ago. Our magazine storage was starting to overflow and I thought the wooden chalkboard storage bin would do well to corral all of our magazines and catalogs. I tore out the ad and over lunch one day showed it to my husband. I asked him if we could build one.

You might remember my post about building some things over the weekend not too long ago. That included this storage bin. My husband had scrap wood to work with so he cut the pieces to size for me. We went to Sears and bought stain in the color “Gunstock” and I got to work on staining all of the pieces. My original plan was to tape off a square to paint with chalkboard paint, but I’m horrible at straight lines (even when taped off). So I painted the entire face of one of the wood pieces. The other night, my husband hammered all of the pieces together and we now have a nice, new, sturdy storage bin!

To make a storage box like this, you will need:
– 5 pieces of wood cut to size of your choosing (our box is about 12.5″ across with a depth of 10″)
– stain
– chalkboard paint
– adhesive cork dots
Stain all of your wood and let dry. Then paint one face of your wood in chalkboard paint. Let that dry. Start with your base and hammer all of your pieces together to build a box. If desired, use adhesive cork dots on the bottom corners of your storage bin to prevent scuffing and scratches on the floor. Use the storage for magazines, toys, blankets or whatever you desire!
