We all know that organic foods are becoming a big trend in grocery stores and markets.  Not only are they grown without genetic modification and harsh chemicals, but they are better for our consumption as there are less toxins entering our bodies.  That means less risk of cancer and other illnesses.

But before you jump into organic living, did you know that not all produce needs to be organic to be considered safe from pesticides?  Recently my cousin told me to look up the “Dirty Dozen.”  My simple understanding was that produce with a peel passed the test.  Here’s the “Dirty Dozen” of the 12 most and least contaminated fruits and veggies:

The 12 Most Contaminated

  1. Peaches
  2. Nectarines
  3. Apples
  4. Bell Peppers
  5. Celery
  6. Strawberries
  7. Cherries
  8. Pears
  9. Grapes
  10. Spinach
  11. Lettuce
  12. Potatoes

The 12 Least Contaminated

  5. Mango
  6. Asparagus
  7. Frozen Sweet Peas
  8. Kiwi
  9. Bananas
  10. Cabbage
  11. Broccoli

The 12 most contaminated fruits and veggies are the ones you want to buy organic.  I just recently tried organic strawberries and wow!  What a difference in taste!  Even the color of the berries look brighter!

Not only will organic produce do your body good, but it can do your wallet good as well.  Yes, it might seem more expensive when you first glance at the price tags on organic fruits and veggies.  In the long run, the produce tends to last longer so you’ll have less spoiled produce in the trash.  In fact, salad made with organic lettuce has lasted me a week or more without it starting to brown!

Have you swapped some of your regular grocery items for organic items?  What are your favorites?
