Do you remember that beach walk I took with my husband on his birthday? I found a wooden plank on the beach that I later learned was from a barrel. When I first spotted the plank on the beach, I imagined it becoming a beach-themed sign with a worn, retro-style appearance. My husband found a piece of driftwood he thought would pull my project together. Over the weekend, I started my project.

It took a day or two to come up with the perfect phrase to paint on my plank of wood. After looking for some inspiration online, I decided on “ebb and flow.” “Ebb and flow” describes the natural movement of the ocean. It’s a give and take. In life there is good and bad, but in the end there will always be a balance between the two.

I left the wood plank just as it was; chipped, cracked and found in its natural state. With two shades of blue and a bottle of white, I started painting the lettering. One side has bird detail while the other has waves. We still need to permanently affix the plank to the driftwood, but I’m rather pleased with how it turned out. It’s simple, summery and will eventually sit outside in our backyard.
