M&J Trimming provided me with an October Project DIY box in exchange for this review. All opinions are my own. Gabba gabba hey!
Today I’m introducing you to one of the newest DIY and fashion subscription boxes. Project DIY was launched by M&J Trimming; a designer’s dream that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting a few years ago during a trip to New York. The walls of the store are lined with more trims and embellishments than you can imagine! It’s a crafter’s candy store! M&J Trimming’s jewelry design team has come together to create 2-3 runway and street inspired looks per month for Project DIY. All projects are shipped to your door in stylish boxes and include all the tools you need to create on-trend, handmade projects.
M&J Trimming was kind enough to send me their October box. The box’s theme is Punk Revival, inspired by the Met’s exhibit PUNK: Chaos to Couture. In my late teens, I became a fan of the punk rock movement, which introduced me to the art of DIY. As a fan of fashion, I love punk-inspired trends paired with more feminine looks. Think: CBGB of the late 70’s-early 80’s meets the babydoll, Courtney Love era of the 90’s. The music and the underground culture of punk rock has always been one of independence, self-expression and let’s face it–not giving a f***.
This month’s collection of projects include a Luxe Punk Collar, Oversized Chain Pin and Spike Tassel Pendant. I was immediately excited once I unearthed the pillow boxes from the subscription box! Chains, metal and spikes are softened by the addition of rhinestones and pearls, but still lend an edge to your wardrobe.
The first project I completed was the Oversized Chain Pin. Safety pins have become quite the staple in punk-influenced fashion. Initially used to hold torn clothes together because many artists couldn’t afford new clothing, they are now seen as embellishments in rock’n’roll style. An oversized safety pin becomes the base for this project. A black chain, silver chain and pearl rosary chain dangle off the pin. The additional of spikes are optional. I, of course, added mine. The project was easy to put together with step-by-step instructions that could be found on their free app downloaded from iTunes. It took less than 20 minutes to put my new accessory together. Once I was finished, I added my pin to my denim jacket for a killer new look!
One thing I can say about this box is that it has given me the correct tools and knowledge about jewelry/accessory making. I’ll be spending a lot more time at the craft store gaining inspiration and making new accessory pieces! As I complete the next two projects, I’ll add them to the blog.
