Use the Cricut Joy and Smart Materials™ to create a bright and sunny DIY Summer Beach Hat Wreath that will instantly update your front door with summer style!
This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Cricut. All opinions are 100% mine.
I’ve always wanted one of those big, floppy beach hats with a saying on the side of it. But I don’t hang out by the pool and I’m not a huge fan of the beach. So I never really had a reason to buy one. Plus, would I ever wear the hat if I did? Probably not. Instead, I decided to make my own version of those beach hats and turn it into a wreath for our front door!
One of the easiest ways to update your home is to change the wreath on your door each season. Summer may be halfway over, but I wanted to switch things up on our front door. So I used a dollar store hat, some summery ribbon, faux florals, my Cricut Joy, Smart Iron-On, and the Cricut EasyPress Mini to create a summer beach hat wreath.
How to Make a DIY Summer Beach Hat Wreath
Even though I used my Cricut Joy to make this wreath, this project could easily be made with any of Cricut’s machines. With the Cricut Joy, I cut out a cute phrase to iron onto the straw hat. Then, I decorated the hat with ribbon and artificial flowers. It’s an adorable way to dress up door for summer!
But first, I had to decide what I wanted my hat wreath to say. You can decorate this wreath with a summery saying like “take me to the beach” or “hello sunshine.” I decided to make a bright and sunny wreath with the phrase “hello sunshine” on the side of it.
So the first thing I did was create my text in Design Space. Then, I added a slight curve to it to fit the side of my hat and welded the text together.
Next, I had to cut the image. Since I was using such a small amount of vinyl, I used my Cricut Joy for this project. Because I used Smart Iron-On, I didn’t even need to use a mat! I just loaded my iron-on material into the Cricut Joy, made sure that the image was mirrored in Design Space, and cut!
After weeding the image, I positioned it in place and heated up my EasyPress Mini. I figured the Mini would be easier to use since I was working within such a small surface area of the hat. I placed the hat onto an EasyPress Mat and ironed the text into place on the side of the hat, peeled the backing off, and moved onto decorating.
I decorated the wreath with bright, sunshine colors like pinks, oranges, and yellows. I wrapped a citrus print ribbon about the hat and glued it into place with my hot glue gun. Then, I added some artificial flowers around the base of the hat.
Once I was finished decorating the hat, I glue a loop of ribbon to the back of the hat and displayed it on our front door.
- Summer hat
- Cricut Joy
- Smart Iron-On
- EasyPress Mini
- EasyPress Mat
- Hot glue gun
- 5/8″ ribbon
- Artificial flowers
- Open this design in Design Space. Resize if necessary to fit your hat.
- Power on the Cricut Joy and load the Smart Iron-On into the machine.
- Follow the prompts in Design Space to cut out the design. Make sure to mirror the image! Then, weed the design.
- Heat the EasyPress Mini, place the hat onto the EasyPress Mat, and position the design onto the side of the hat. Then, iron the design onto the hat for about 60-70 seconds. Let the iron-on cool slightly before peeling the backing off.
- Once the iron-on is in place, heat a glue gun. Then, add some summery ribbon around the hat and glue into place. Continue decorating the hat with summer florals.
- When the hat is completely decorated, glue a loop of ribbon onto the back of the wreath. Then, display on your door!
If you want to make a beachier hat, I suggest using seashells instead of flowers to decorate your hat. I would also recommend using Cobalt Holographic Smart Iron-On for total mermaid vibes! I used the yellow iron-on from the Neon Iron-On Sampler to create this bright and sunny hat wreath.
