Some good has come out of the craziness of 2020.  Having my husband home a lot more has made it easier to get our list of home projects done a lot faster!  We live in an older house, so it feels like we’re constantly doing something.  This year, we’ve been able to repaint our living room, ceilings, trim, doors, and freshen up the hallway.  And when the weather warmed up, we worked on the outside of our house, painting railings, repairing part of our deck, and working in our garden.

In the midst of repairs and repainting, I’ve done a lot of reorganizing.  One thing I’ve been trying to do over the past few years is embrace a minimalist lifestyle.  I’ve come to realize that there’s so much we end up holding onto that no longer serves a purpose.  Especially with home decor and outdoor decorations!  So if I haven’t used something in over a year, I end up donating it or giving it away.  In the meantime, I’ve been trying to invest in modern, minimal pieces that we can enjoy year after year. 

Modern Minimal Curb Appeal Ideas

 
Upping our home’s curb appeal, while keeping it minimal, is something I’ve been working on.  But I think I’ve finally found my groove.  I did some landscaping last year, planting perennials and bulbs in our stretch of rock garden in our front yard.  Perennials come back year after year, so I don’t have to worry about replanting in the spring.

I’ve also turned multiple pots on our front steps (that started to look like clutter) into one urn planter that’s filled with different types of plants and a solar lantern that lights the way at night.  And an artificial boxwood wreath hangs on our front door for a welcoming touch.


It’s a simple setup, but still adds just the right amount of curb appeal to our home.  Eventually, I’ll add other durable, minimal, and modern pieces to the outside of our home (new house numbers, maybe new porch lights, and I’d love to get a Ring doorbell) and continue to fix up the exterior (like our stairs desperately need a makeover, or at least a good cleaning).  For now, it’s a work in progress.

Home Organization Products for Every Room in Your Home

I don’t know if I’ve ever told you this, but I have a serious obsession with storage baskets!  Actually, I have an obsession with baskets, in general.  Not only are they completely functional, but a lot of them are pretty enough to serve decorative purposes, as well. This time of year, it’s all about getting organized and cleaning up after the busy holiday season!  It’s also the time of year that I tend to go crazy buying baskets to organize our home. This year, I think I’m pretty much set after updating storage spaces in our home last year.

The bathroom

Last year, I repainted the bathroom closet and stripped the shelves of their old contact paper.  Then, I organized everything – our towels, toiletries, and cleaning supplies – with fabric, wicker, and plastic baskets.  Each basket has a designated purpose so it’s easy to find what we need.

The hall closet

I also redid our hall closet.  Once again, I stripped the shelves to reveal their natural wood finish.  Then, I stocked up on fabric and wire baskets to hold all of the random stuff that ends up in our closet.  We also have an organizer drawer to hold cards and my stationery. 

The office

The office is a space that I’m constantly organizing.  It’s also my craft space, so there’s a lot going on in there!  After bringing home my first Cricut machine, I knew I had to create a better system for all of my craft supplies.  So we put up a shelving unit and I added wire baskets to hold supplies, notebooks, and anything else I use while I’m in the office. 

The living room

We have two seagrass baskets that fit perfectly inside the bottom cubbies of our entertainment center.  Not only do they look great, they hide DVDs, games, and controllers.  Hunter’s even got his own basket for all of his toys! 

The attic

The attic hasn’t always been a priority for organization.  Out of sight, out of mind!  Throw it in a storage tote and be done with it!  But last year, we bought another shelving unit for the attic and I was able to really get our attic in shape!  Now, it’s a space that holds some of our decorations and even some of my blog props.

Our Easy Farmhouse Inspired Kitchen Update

Last week, my husband and I completed our biggest DIY project together so far.  Our 1950’s kitchen needed a serious update.  If you have an older house with older floors and whatnot, then you know how hard it is to make it look nice all the time.  That was our kitchen.  No matter how hard I mopped, scrubbed, or bleached, it still looked dirty.  Not because it was dirty, but because it was old.

The thing that bothered me most about our kitchen was the floor.  It was an old linoleum floor with dings, dents, and a yellowed area that just wouldn’t budge.  My last resort at attempting to make the floor look okay was buying a L-shaped rug to hide most of it.

We finally agreed that the time was right this summer to give our kitchen a well-deserved modern update.  Our inspiration was the ever popular farmhouse trend with a touch of modern minimalism.



So we started looking for floors and fell in love with the Pergo Outlast+ Southport Oak flooring.  It’s got a cool weathered, textured look to it that, as my husband describes it, “is bad ass.”  It’s lighter in color and worked well with our kitchen.  The best part was, we didn’t have to rip up our old floor to put it down.  We laid it down right on top of it.

Even though we were putting new flooring down, we were keeping our original cabinets.  We gave them a fresh coat of paint in BEHR Premium Plus Ultra Pure White and added new hardware.  Our old cabinet pulls were starting to rust and I wanted a simpler design. 

I picked out Liberty Newton Satin Nickel Dual Mount Cabinet Pulls.  They come in a 10 pack, making them an affordable option for kitchens with lots of cabinet doors!  Against the bright white cabinets, they look fresh, modern, and minimal.


After the cabinets were painted completely white and the floor was put down, my husband added molding to the bottom of the cabinets as well as the rest of the room. The bottom of the cabinets were formerly painted gray.  This transition gives them a cleaner look and a little extra detail.



We had a wood, swinging door in the entryway to the kitchen. That was taken down. Just simply taking that door down made our dining room and kitchen seem bigger and brighter!

Our walls were previously blueish-gray in color that we painted over with BEHR Fashion Gray.  It’s a gorgeous, classic gray color that’s a little darker than what we had, but I love it!  Since everything else was getting updated, I gave my upcycled window chalkboard a fresh coat of paint, too!



It took us five days to finish our kitchen update. And that’s without changing any of the cabinets, counter tops, or hooking up new appliances! Most of it was painting and cutting and installing the new trim.  My husband did some excellent work on our kitchen!  It makes me so happy when I walk in there now!


I posted some of the process and finished sneak peeks on my Instagram Story and got a few questions about the flooring.  It’s laminate flooring that comes in planks.  The particular style we wanted was purchased through Home Depot, but not carried in store.  The planks snap together with an installation tool and took an afternoon to put in.  My husband and father-in-law put the floor together.  They said it took a little time to figure out at first, but once they got going, it was easy! 

The pictures definitely do not do this floor, and our entire kitchen, justice!  I wasn’t fond of our blue counters before, but now I love how they bring the room together with a pretty pop of color!  They add a little charm to the simple, farmhouse style we were going for, too!  Next up, we’ll up giving our bedroom an update with a fresh coat of paint and new furniture!
