Valentine’s Day Teacup Fairy Garden

Give an old teacup new life by creating a trendy teacup fairy garden! Make a romantic, little scene with miniatures, succulents, and rose petals that you can keep displayed well after Valentine’s Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Today we celebrate love and you already know that I love my succulent projects! I mean, I’ll basically find any excuse to do some sort of gardening. Especially if it involves succulents! Of course, many of my indoor gardening efforts haven’t always gone as planned. Just ask my husband how many houseplants I’ve managed to kill during our relationship (including so-called “low maintenance” succulents, cacti, aloe, etc.). Still, I love getting my hands down and dirty with some new plants. It’s relaxing and allows me to take a time out to enjoy a little piece of nature.

I read somewhere recently that teacup fairy gardens were going to be a big gardening trend in 2018. So clearly, any excuse to go buy succulents and gardening supplies was good enough for me! These days, I’ve been sticking to artificial plants. It’s a safer bet for all of us and most of them still look as good as the real thing! In the long run, they’re a lot cheaper than the real thing, too. Again, you don’t want to know how many poor, little plants have died, been replaced, and died again under my care.

Since I knew I was going to use succulents in my garden, I needed a teacup to put them in. A year or two ago, I bought a vintage looking teacup and saucer set from HomeGoods. I had turned it into a candle for my kitchen, but once the candle was gone, I had an empty teacup to fill. So I knew it would be perfect to use for my teacup fairy garden! I really wanted to make a Valentine’s Day themed fairy garden. Nothing too over-the-top and flashy. Just a simple, romantic scene that I could keep displayed well passed the Valentine’s Day holiday.

I really wanted a swan somewhere in my fairy garden and luckily found a set of miniatures that included one. Swans are beautiful, graceful creatures that are often associated with love. My set of miniatures also included a bridge and an Eiffel Tower. I figured, “What’s more romantic than Paris?” So I created a pretty, little Parisian theme that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Even though I used artificial succulents in this fairy garden, I still filled my teacup with potting soil. It helped anchor my succulents into place. It also added a nice foundation to build on. Since I was using a bridge miniature, I used blue gravel to create the illusion of water flowing underneath it. Around the gravel, I added preserved moss, succulents, and some rose petals I had leftover from my Valentine’s Day bath salts project. Then, I added the swan and Eiffel Tower to finish my romantic fairy garden scene.

Fill your teacup with potting soil. Make sure to leave a little room on top to build up your scene.
Next, add blue gravel down the middle of the cup to create your stream of water.
Add preserved moss on each side of the blue gravel.
Trim your succulents, if necessary, and gently push them down into the teacup.
Then, place the bridge over the gravel and add the Eiffel Tower and swan.
Add rose petals, if desired, to finish off this Valentine’s Day teacup fairy garden.

As far as I’m concerned, most things in life are way cuter when they’re in miniature form. The great thing about this teacup fairy garden is that it doesn’t take up much room. So if you’re a crazy plant lady like I am, you’ll still be able to fit this cute little garden into your decor. Plus, it doesn’t scream “Valentine’s Day” so you’ll be able to keep it displayed all year ’round!
