Every once in a while, an ad for a new product graces my Facebook feed and makes me think, “Hmm…I’ve got to try that!” That’s basically what happened when I saw an ad for Hungryroot. As someone who is always looking for creative new ways to make healthy dishes for the hubs and me, this seemed right up our alley. A friend of mine recently shared her Hungryroot delivery on Instagram and I had to know more about it. After texting back and forth about the meals in her order, I decided to sign up.
A week later, my order arrived at our door! Unlike other meal subscription boxes, Hungryroot pretty much prepares everything for you. Plus, you get to choose everything you want in your box. There’s minimal preparation involved with the meals and the only extra ingredients you’ll need are salt, pepper, water, and olive oil. The snacks that I picked were ready to eat upon arrival. So easy!
I could not wait to dig straight into the container of Almond Chickpea Cookie Dough! It’s an eggless cookie dough that you can eat raw or baked into cookies. There was no way I was baking any cookies with this cookie dough! I’ve been enjoying it with a spoon! Despite being made with chickpeas, it tastes exactly like chocolate chip cookie dough!
I also got a container of Vanilla Bean Snickerdoodle Dough. It’s hard to believe that this stuff is made with white kidney beans because it tastes just like a Snickerdoodle cookie! Even though I’ve enjoyed a couple spoonfuls of this dough, I might actually use it to bake up a batch of cookies.
This time of year, I can’t get enough of lemon desserts! So I was excited to try the Coconut Lemon Pie Bites. They’re ready to eat right out of the package and remind me of lemon meringue pie with a coconut twist. So good!
Since I was done stuffing my face with snacks, I decided it was time to get the hubs in on the action. Our house definitely isn’t vegan or vegetarian (although I do love a good veggie loaded meal from time-to-time). So the meals that I got in our box would either become lunches for me or side dishes for dinners. My once picky, now adventurous, semi-foodie husband has been down for trying some of my new vegetarian creations lately, so I knew I could at least get him to taste the meals in the box. Like he says, “I don’t really care what it’s made with as long as it tastes good.”
First up was the Lemon Kale Caesar Salad. I pretty much knew this would be a win for both of us. I mean, who doesn’t like a good Caesar salad? This salad is made with a Kalebeet Blend, Lemon Artichoke Quinoa Bowl, and Chickpea Alfredo. You mix the Kalebeet Blend with the Lemon Artichoke Quinoa Bowl. Then, you make your dressing with the Chickpea Alfredo, olive oil, salt, pepper, and a little water. The salad was awesome and still so good the next day! We both really enjoyed it!
I really, really wanted to share my box with you, so I haven’t had the chance to try everything yet because it’s a lot of food. However, everything I’ve tried so far has been a total win! I’m pretty confident that we’ll love the rest of the meals, too! So what’s left to make? The Cheesy Butternut Squash Fries, Cherry Chia Maple Oatmeal, Sweet Potato Pad Thai, and Roasted Red Pepper Quinoa Bowl.
The Cherry Chia Maple Oatmeal is going to make an awesome heat and eat breakfast. Hungryroot says it’s a tasty combo of protein, sweet, and tartness to get your morning going. They also suggest turning it into a parfait, which I’m totally digging! I ordered an extra Lemon Artichoke Quinoa Bowl, so that and the Roasted Red Pepper Quinoa Bowl will make delicious side dishes with dinner with leftovers for lunch the next day.
I’m also really eager to try the Cheesy Butternut Squash Fries. They’re baked and then topped with a Cashew Cheddar. I recently turned cashews into cookie butter, so it’ll be interesting to see how they work as a cheese sauce! That just leaves the Sweet Potato Pad Thai, which I know will be amazing because Pad Thai is absolutely delicious! This one’s made with sweet potato ribbons, snap peas, and Thai Peanut sauce.
Here’s the cool thing about the sauces. If you love them, there’s more than enough in the containers to use in other dishes!
So what’s the verdict? So far, so good and Hungryroot’s ordering system is pretty flexible. I’ve skipped the next couple of weeks just so we can make and eat everything we’ve already got in the fridge. It’s definitely not a subscription I would use on a weekly basis unless I was fully committed to a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle, but it’s pretty damn tasty!
